Dog Training Careers

Of course there are dog training careers, after all who do you think is teaching all of those obedience classes at your local pet store. Who is in charge of helping judge events that determine obedience, as well as agility? Dog trainers of course and this field is rapidly growing. Why people choose a dog training career usually depends upon their exact personality and the type of dog they wish to work with, some people enjoy working with those dogs that are competing, while others enjoy working with dogs doing the teaching more.

There is plenty of opportunity, and honestly dog training careers usually do not involve much secondary education. While someone needs to have a lot of skills working with animals and it is also helpful to have some experience working with different breeds you are not required to have a college degree. This opens the world of dog training careers to even teenagers who are not old enough to be in college yet, much less graduate.

If you enjoy working with dogs then a career as a dog trainer may be just the job you are looking for. However, in order to be successful at a dog training career you cannot be afraid of dogs. Some people are frightened of a puppy that weighs less than a pound; in order to be successful you cannot have this fear as many dogs that need to be trained weigh upwards of 200 pounds. However, the large sized dogs will typically represent the larger percentage of “students” in a training class.

Why larger dogs are typically present more often in training classes is not because they are harder to train, it is simply because their bad behavior is more noticeable because of their size. If you have a very small dog such as a Yorkshire Terrier or a Chihuahua that is bad about chewing on furniture, they will not be able to do as much damage as a dog such as a Saint Bernard or even a Great Dane. Because the larger dogs are more noticeable causing damage they are more likely to be signed up for obedience. Nevertheless, this simply means you have plenty of work to do continuously as the dogs are all brought into new homes and must be trained.
